Yes, the hatch returns (welcome back hatch!), and I really like the BMW refinement of having a section of the hatch that can open like a smaller trunk.
I haven't seen the BMW yet but my understanding is that it's taller than the regular 5-series and thus slots between a large car and a truck.
But, like the Panamera, the BMW is far more expensive than a true 9000 descendant ought to be. For me, hatch notwithstanding, we can't call a new car the 9000 of the future until it embodies the same priorities, namely:
1. Reasonable cost
2. Large interior within compact exterior
It seems even in Europe the 5-door layout is usually equipped with a more traditional upright hatch, a la the Golf. Purely speculating here, but I wonder if the long, heavy hatch of our 9000s (and previous 900s and 99s) might be too difficult to engineer without squeaks, body flex, and probably cost and weight?
Too bad BMW is so committed (to a fault in my opinion) to the high end of the marketplace here. If they made something more affordable and more practical they might well become a buyer's practical choice, rather than the current performance/luxury choice.
