...still, one wishes they might aim for a somewhat smaller margin, perhaps, on some models. Of course, as you point out, this might've put them in need of bailouts like so many manufacturers.
That's part of our dilemma here as we watch the sun set on Saab. Maybe we should blame consumers rather than manufacturers for consuming so many unnecessary "features" and seeming to ignore more practical concerns.
BMW's approach in Europe is slightly less focused on the premium buyer, but maybe that's only because purchasing a car there is so much more costly than here (relative to income).
