Before you blame the head gasket, of course during the cold months you'll see fairly steamy exhaust naturally. Without poisoning yourself, can you detect any sweetness in the exhaust smell? Have you inspected your engine oil to see if it looks milky?
You can also use the soda-bottle test to see if combustion gases are getting into the cooling system. Take a clear coke bottle and fill it with water. Remove the end of the small hose on the expansion tank (from the tank end) and immerse it in the bottle. Have an assistant start the car and watch for air bubbles from the end of the hose. If you see them, that indicates combustion gases are present in the cooling system. Auto parts stores also sell testers for this purpose (they evaluate the coolant chemically).
Finally, be aware that in automatic cars, the radiator contains an integrated transmission oil cooler which can leak, mixing ATF into the coolant. This will turn the coolant an ugly brown. Personally I think this is going to be your issue, because it's been relatively rare (not unheard of) to hear of oil and coolant mixing as you describe when 9000 head gaskets fail. If you find you have a leaking transmission oil cooler, it's a matter of replacing the radiator assembly. Much less costly and less daunting than a head gasket replacement.
