For what it's worth, my hose broke right near the tank and I didn't get a fuel smell except when very full. However, I did get some fuel leakage with a full tank and when fill the tank at a gas station, which of course isn't desirable and something to watch out for. If you plugged the hose going into the tank, you're likely going to have issue as the tank needs to pull air from somewhere and modern gas caps don't vent.
