Strange news to me as I've never had a issue from '87 to 96 models, 2 litre and 2.3 litre engines. Yes, you do have to use a bit of ingenuity to wiggle it out neatly..But it comes out/reinserts 'cleanly' without much effort at all. Honestly Don't quite comprehend the problem you are having. Perhaps I've simply gotten used to it having done it way too often. Persevere, as it IS possible, is the only help I can offer.
I remove the cams from Heads ALWAYS, as once (early 70's) I ruined my freshly rebuilt Jaguar cyl head by placing it down my workbench on apparently inadequate spacers, thereby bending ONE intake valve. It was Very noisy once the reassembled engine was fired up. Entire job had to be redone two more weekends and a whack of money lost.
A Very Memorable lesson..as result My DOHC heads do not leave the cyl block with cams installed.. ever!
