Older cars and a/c needn't be a nightmare.
That's an R-134a car - get a compressor powered venturi type vac pump for $30 & some cheap gauges from Northern Tool, 3-4 cans of the cheapest (I pay $5 for the name-brand stuff you get anyplace at biglots...), used/good condenser - and add in good oil as well as a can of $6 leak sealer when you charge it. (I'd keep the existing compressor too.)
The hardest part of the job is getting the lower condensor joint loosened without breaking it for which I (of course) recommend liberally applying Kroil or SiliKroil 3-4x beforehand.
It is easy as pie, takes no large amount of time and costs 1/10th what all the a/c places charge for work you perform with definite care.
IF it later fails you can always fall-back to flying and buying and all that stuff that co$t$ so much more - but in my 9K a/c experiences it has always been possible to fix 'em, even the old R-12 ones I had.
There is no need to get crazy replacing e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g in a system using R-134a - the pressures are not extreme and they are quite forgiving if your vac work is not 100% perfect.
I don't even replace the rec/driers (unless they leak).
Best Wishes,
mark
