The problem.... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Fri, 14 May 2010 10:52:14 In Reply to: Re: Oil Pressure Gauge Suggestions, derf, Thu, 13 May 2010 18:35:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
With the "idiot" light is that it only comes on at an extremely low pressure, 6, 8, maybe as much as 10 PSI. Far below the 50-80 PSI "normal" operating pressure.
So, yes, it may be more accurate hitting it's set point, and it may be faster at turning the light on, but damage may already have started in the motor, if it was running at a low pressure for a time.
I had a C900 that developed an internal oil leak. When the motor was cold, the gauge read well up into the 40s and 50s. Just fine. When the motor got warm, the pressure dropped into the 20s. Not good! Never low enough to switch the light on - even the 20PSI (IIRC) switch in the VDO gauge/light sender. But the motor eventually developed a rod knock from this.
