On an auto, it's pretty easy to check the dipstick level periodically to see if it's leaking. A manual is more work, but you really need to do it to find if that's the source of the leak.
If a manual: in case you didn't know, R/R a transmission is a fairly major job. You will probably want to replace the clutch, slave cylinder and hose while you're in there, which makes this a $1200 - 1500 (ballpark) job. If it's just slowly seeping, I would try some chemical cure before removing the transmission. On my Audi A4 Quattro, I cured seeping rear differential seals by replacing the gear lube with Amsoil - has built-in seal conditioners; this was a $30 fix to what could have been a $1000 job (and a much bigger job if the fluid got too low).
