I changed my fuel pump and broke one of the check valves in the process. Putting the line on the new valve took two hours. We made a tool like they show on a diagram that came with the pump. That tool is metal, but we used plexiglass, first drilling the right-sized hole, then cutting it in half to produce two half-moon shapes where the hole was drilled. Then we clamped this to the line and used two pairs of channel-lock pliers to move it along. It's a two-person job.

The line gets pretty brittle with age, I think. We tried heating the line with a blow drier - very nervous about that, with the gas tank being near, but we plugged the hole where the check valve enters and had good ventilation. Anyway, the line softened somewhat abruptly - I had hoped it would soften gradually and become more compliant. I don't think we were heating it too fast; it softened after about 3 minutes, but it happened rapidly, and the line became floppy and worthless, so we had to trim some off. So we resorted to lubricants, which finally worked. I didn't want anything that would remain slippery and would allow the line to work its way off, like vaseline, so I think that we used saliva. Swedish saliva works best. Just kidding. WD-40 might degrade the line. We got the line on about 3/4 of the way, and that's the best we could do.

My understanding about the gasoline smell is that the check valves crack at their 90 degree bend, allowing a small leak, and that's why yours broke so easily upon withdrawing it.
