Distributor Plug leaking - what am I missing?

I've attached a shot of the distributor plug in my '96 9000 CSE turbo. It's been leaking slowly for a while, but over the past 6 months or so it has gotten worse. I've got a new plug and O-ring here that I'd like to install. I'm guessing I need to remove the valve cover to knock it out from the inside, correct? I hate to do that because my valve cover gasket is less than 2 years old and doesn't have any leaks. Any way to get it out from the outside? I'm not opposed to destroying the old plug if it saves me the hassle of pulling the valve cover.
Also, based on what I've been reading in the archives, there's supposed to be some sort of retainer screwed in there with a tamper-proof torx screw. Am I missing that?
