premium fuel in n/a engine?

Consumer Reports claims that higher octane fuel will yield no benefit unless the manufacturer demands it. I know turbo engines recommend premium, but what about n/a engines? My 2.3 n/a runs beautifully on premium and gets ~29mpg highway on a good day, but I haven't filled with regular, or even mid-grade, for about three years. Higher octane has a greater energy density, so it only makes sense that higher octane will result in less fuel usage for a given time. Right? And, from what I recall, it also burns hotter, which should help remove deposits.
Certainly no damage will come to the engine, but am I wasting money?
