Premium fuel would make the N/A run better because the ECM can maximize tune knowing that knock will occur at a higher threshold. That's the benefit of premium fuel, in cars that are built to take advantage of it (which all Saabs have been since the mid '80s).

In my old BMW 535i, which had a lower compression ratio than these Saabs, that was a case of a car that ran best on low-octane fuel (i.e., "low grade" gas) because it was not designed to alter its tune to take advantage of the slower-burning high-octane fuel. So in that case premium fuel would only result in more unburned fuel and reduced performance.

So, in a nutshell, Saabs can always benefit from premium fuel. But I still run mid- or low-grade fuel in them because I'm a cheapskate.
