Noel,
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it", applies to one who has both the financial and emotional wherewithal to own and operate a 16 year-old vehicle. While you might, it seems unlikely your daughter has either.
Let's review:
1. She will be on an internship, unlikely nearby.
2. She'll need a car and you'd rather she have her own.
3. It's likely she will be in a place without a nearby Saab indy.
4. Do you send her off in that 173K mile known quantity?
5. The new tires she bought will go on hers.
6. The '95 will still be a bit of a beater.
7. Car presently uses only a little oil, runs well, most stuff works OK.
OR. . .do I drop $5-7K (max affordability) on a used something?????
You might ask your indy what he would do with the 95 if HIS daughter was venturing off. But realistically, why not consider replacing her "bit of a beater" with an Aero or CSE? It would seem more efficient to invest in a GOOD 9000, which fits her needs, than to pour money into an already deteriorated one. Your $5-7K budget would allow for purchase, repair, and maintenance of a similar or better equipped '94-98 era 9000. Your indy might help you locate a good one.
I say this based on my limited 9000 experience. I bought a 95 CS for my daughter in high school. She drove it 60K miles in 7 years until the torque converter whined. It sat for 2 years until I decided to fix it. I drove it another 25k until it was totaled.
My daily driver is a 96 CS (FPT) with 225K miles. I also have a 97 CS with 148K miles that is currently laid up with head gasket failure, (MY error!).
On the other hand, my daughter has had 60K NO PROBLEM miles in her 2005 Acura TSX and my wife is delighted with her own new Acura TL. And while it would be great to find a used HONDA 2000, one could buy several AERO's for the same amount of money.
I would heartily recommend if you buy something other than a 9000, that you check the NHTSA head injury crash rating. Look for five star crash ratings only. Cars are way cheaper to repair than brains.
Happy SAABing!
