The center splash shield is secured with six 10mm bolts. The two forward-most ones can be attacked by gripping/crushing their spinning retaining nuts with vicegrips inserted through the lowest openings in the air dam and a socket and ratchet on the bolt head.
There are two additional bolts on either that attach to the side splash shields. They can only be removed with the side splash shields off the car. Each side splash shield is secured with five 10mm bolts- -two easy ones to the subframe, and three difficult ones to the bumper. Remove the easy ones first, then use a large screwdriver to pry the plastic clips on the back of the center splash shield off the bottom front ledge of the subframe. With the rear of the center splash shield hanging down and the side splash shield subframe bolts removed, you can reach the crush nuts holding the side shields to the bumper. Again, clamp the spinning nuts with vicegrips and remove their bolts. Finally, detach the three metal clips from the leading edge of the center splash shield by prying a large screwdriver between the center splash shield and the bumper forcing the clips rearwards. Once the three splash pieces are free, you can separate the side shields from the center, and remove the remnants of the spinning crush nuts.
AT LAST! Access to the outside temperature sensor!
Take one of the 10mm bolts to your local hardware store and buy twelve speed nuts. (A speed nut is essentially a metal strap with a bolt hole in its center, that folds over the top and bottom where the crush nut was.) Use the bolt to verify the size of the hole in the speed nut. Hammer the speed nuts over the three bumper edge holes and two center splash shield holes of the two side splash shields. The two remaining speed nuts will secure the forward-most bolts of the center splash shield- -again, with vicegrips or pliers, through the air dam openings.
Before reassembly, clean up the bolt threads with a wire wheel and apply anti-seize to the threads.
