I'm not reading the rest of the thread, hope I don't miss something important.
This sounds like the typical issue where the aggregate resistance in the total circuit to give power to the YELLOW wire on the starter that attaches to the solenoid is such that the amperage there is TOO low to make the solenoid do it's thing.
If the following sounds familiar then pretty sure this is your problem. sometimes the car won't start, turn the key and hear that click behind where the glove box (on years with it) but in the same place, and it will not crank. your battery is most likely charged, new, or in known good shape. sometimes if you jump the car it will start. This usually occurs either on a hot day, in the sun all day, or right after you stopped for a short time (run in the 7/11 to get a soda) and it won't crank. It Never happens in the early morning when cold. You may have replaced the battery, the starter, or the starter switch and it got good... for awhile... but then the issue returned. If you this is your issue, there is a pretty easy very low cost ($30 or less depending upon what stuff you have already - connectors, wire, crimp tool).
to Test this. you can do this. the starter is right next to the oil dipstick tube. You can get to this without taking anything off... but you will get dirty :). if you have ever taken the cover off at the false firewall, take that off and then the firewall portion next to the dipstick. it makes access easier
you will need a female spade connector attached to about three feet of 16 or larger (smaller number) wire. the other side can be bare.
find the yellow (color may look like old mustard) wire with the white plastic connector, it's plugged onto a spade connector on the solenoid that is attached to the starter. you want to pull that connector off, and put your test connector in it's place on the solenoid.
at this point you can do a crank test or a start test. for the start test make sure you have put things out of the way! the crank test is quick.
Start test is turn the key to the run position, (see the idiot lights in the dash), then do the crank test but if that works the car will start.
Crank Test, if you don't like holding a sparking wire, take a pair of pliers of your choice and grip the bare wire in them, then touch the RED HOT terminal on the battery. The starter should crank and the car should start if this is the start test.
IF this is your problem... send me an email and I will send you the step by step with color pictures procedure to fix this, permanently. You did 25% of the work setting up up for the test!
