Big brake fluid leak on pressure side
1989 9000T, "only" 345000 km. Brake fluid pool on the ground overnight. Replenishing fluid every few days.
Removed wheel and both inner fender liners. With engine running, can see brake fluid dripping from the firewall end of the pump - about a drop/second. When engine is turned off, overt dripping stops.
So, I've been driving it to monitor things (this is my wife's car). ABS light has been on for years, although sometimes it turns off. Sometimes, the brake fluid light turns on (with plenty of fluid in the reservoir). Last couple of days, as I drive to work, ABS light is on until the first brake application about 5 km away, when brake fluid light also goes on, and stays on for the next 25 km of the trip.
I'm assuming the BF light means that pressure is below a certain level, and that because of the leak, the pump cannot keep up. Since this pump is a critical component, I'm sure it has overheat protection. Can't say if I've ever used brakes during this "protected mode", but I know I've always had assist (I use as little brake as possible, as I consider every application a waste of fuel) so I can't tell whether pump time-out ever coincided with a brake application.
In order to have a closer look, I removed battery, battery tray, moved fuel filter out of the way, etcetera. Still no help with the view.
Except for pads, calipers and rotors, I've never worked on this type of (new to me) brake system. Local Saab dealer has no access to the applicable factory manual. Says online is the only source now.
Can anyone help with this - what else to remove, info downloads, opinions on this job? My wife is driving my convertible, and I miss it in this finally nice weather!
