It's been a while, but it's not that difficult to remove the pump, or the whole assembly for that matter. I do think if possible you should try to identify the exact location of the leak before you pull it out. Also I'm not sure I understand the way the system is performing at this point. If you just turn on the key does the pump shut off within a minute? How many pedal jabs will restart the pump? What's happening with the fluid level in the reservoir?
