Sounds like there may be more than one issue. Ari posted some great writeups years ago, but my cliffnotes version is:
The pump starts when pressure in the system drops below a certain point. The level in the reservoir will rise as pressure drops(that is unless it's all dripping out) and lower as the pump charges the accumulator(which looks like an anarchist bomb from 1920). The accumulator then takes over and provides the braking power for 8-15 applications until it is exhausted at which point the pump comes on again and recharges it. This is familiar stuff--air compressors, domestic well water, etc.
Bottom line is that pump motors overheat and die when they run too much trying to maintain the pressure the regulator is telling it it needs.
You have a leak, but you may also have a bad accumulator. I'm not sure exactly what you're describing as the location of the drip, but it sounds like the flange of the valve block. If you grab it and it will move a little, it's the pump and motor, if not it's the valve body. If you're lucky the pump delivery hose is leaking on the valve body and finding its way to the bottom of the flange.
Again I want to stress that you don't want to burn out your pump- both for your pocketbook and more importantly for the safety of you and anyone else who happens to be in the way when it let's go.
