ac compressor lubrication

I have a 98 9000 with what I believe to be the original ac compressor. The ac is cold when it works.
Lately, when I turn on the ac, the compressor does not engage and the compressor does not make cold air. I have learned, through caveman engineering, that a light tap with a hammer and a screwdriver on the front of the compressor will get it spinning, and voila, my ac works great. I can do this whenever it isn't cooling.
Is there a way to lubricate something so that it will engage properly, eliminating the need for my hammer and screwdriver, or is it new compressor time?
Thanks,
R
