Assuming the car is in good shape overall, start at the ground an move up.

16" rims with good tires--lots of tire choices, rims... not so much.

Bilstein shocks/struts. Touring or HD. Some say the HDs are too hard. And either can sometimes be hard to find. I have Sachs that came in the (no longer available) Sport Chassis kit.

SAS Sway bars. Totally transform the car and handling. Balanced, eliminates a lot of understeer, car will corner great! They come with poly bushings. Also consider new poly bushings for the rear bushes in the front control arms. If you don't do anything else, do SAS bars.

Lower springs might work for you, but be aware of your roads. Maybe get some used Aero springs--only a 10mm drop.

A poly bushings in the front end of the upper motor mount.

Brakes. Really bigger ones are a bit of a project and get pricey. Lots of guys use stock calipers, but with some flavor of Porterfield pads, or Ferodo DS2500 pads for a 1990 BMW M3 and grind the pad edges to fit.

For the engine, scall John Williams for an ECU remap (http://www.jzwtuning.com/index.shtml).

Does great work. I have his Stage 1 (240 hp) in one of my 9Ks.

You might want to be careful going all the way to Stage 5 unless you are really doing some other stuff to the engine and driveline--- just in the interest of reliability. But if you do, get a Quaife LSD to get all the power to the pavement. 8-)
