Well, I relented and replaced the rubber shift coupler and the upper engine mount. The shift coupler was only slightly deformed, but installed the new one anyway. Shifter felt like it had more side to side "spring", but the change had zero effect on the shift lever "hopping" or "jumping" with on/off throttle in 3rd gear.
I formerly said my upper mounts were fine. As a test, I used my long prybar to see if I could move the engine and found that the mounts provided nearly zero
I used baling wire around the upper engine mounts to see if that would limit the movement of the shift lever and it did have a small limiting effect. So I decided to replace the engine mount with a poly version so I didn't need to worry about addressing that in the future. NOTE: I have NOT done the removeable upper mount yet.
After the mount was installed, I've now had significant issues getting the car rolling from 1st gear. It sees that whenever I come to a stop, the car is "stuck" in the last gear (3rd, 4th, etc.); even though it feels like I can select First in the pattern. The engine idles if I put the clutch in, but will die if I let off or dump the clutch in neutral with no gas.
If I put the level near 1st and start the car with my foot feathering the clutch and gas, it will "catch" and I can take off in first gear. At that point, I can mostly shift through the gears and drive in 5th until I run out of gas if necessary. I did find that if I double clutch my downshifts before coming to a stop (even into 1st gear), I can select 1st gear and pull away from a stop normally.
Final note: when I was stalled in an intersection and got some help to push the car one time, with the key on (but not the engine) and the shift lever in neutral, it felt like the car was still in 4th gear with a light bucking motion as we pushed.
I'm thinking there are 3 possible issues:
1 - clutch master cylinder
2 - shift selector rod bearing at the transaxle (haven't checked yet)
3 - shift linkage has loosened somewhere between the cabin and the transaxle.
Thoughts??
