...I spent a few days with a '95 which had the HK setup, with factory CD player. What garbage, particularly the low end -- I could not cause the ~80-120hz bump to go away no matter what I did. My '93 was better in every respect with the Nak powering the rubbish stock speakers... then a whole other world with Infinity Kappas (old blue ones back from when they made them properly...), but I digress...
As for qualifications, I can't say my home amp is bespoke, but it is worth more than a decent 9K (pass x250.5 feeding modified old Magnepan MG-IIIas, with a Sonic Frontiers digital front end...), and I'm also crazy enough to own several pairs of Stax electrostatic headphones for late-night listening... ah, apartment life...
With CDRs, try various brands of blanks until you find one that works well for you, and also burn at RIDICULOUSLY low-speed -- I have the hilarious Saab/Clarion tray-loading cd jobbie in my '89 SPG, and it plays CDRs I've burned at 4x like they're brand new factory-presses.
