I've taken a broken one apart, and I'd say if you can't fix it from the outside, you're not going to have any luck on the inside.
I think the failure modes fall into a few categories:
- Solenoid Electrical Failure, be it short-circuits or burnt/open circuits. Both are likely the result of insulation failure of the coil (with the notable exception of over-current burnouts caused by bad ECU's)
- The puck in the middle can shatter or split.
- Dirt
You might take one apart for educational purposes, but I would be pretty surprised if you could make one working valve even with a handfull of them to start with. First off, its glued together (don't let that stop you). The solenoids themselves aren't really serviceable in any meaningful way, and are made of pretty delicate varnished wire.
