I spent the evening under the hood and under the car. There's a lot of wet stuff under the car beneath the engine, it's dirty and I can't discern from color or odor what is oil and what is coolant. I *think* the oil looks more greasy, coolant just looks wet--but hard to tell with total confidence what is what.
I did find a leak at the junction of the two hoses (one long, the other the short hose that I presume connects to the HC) that either feed or return coolant to/from the heater core--the hoses that are toward the drivers' side wheel are the ones that have a wet junction. There is also fluid (could it be anything other than coolant?) dripping from a circular flap-covered opening, roughly 1.5-2" diameter that seems to drain the aquarium.
I plan to start by replacing the HC hoses. Is the labor to do so bad enough to warrant just replacing the core at this time also, not knowing for certain if the core is failing?
