Try this :
1. In an empty parking lot (or somewhere you have a large level open space), put the car in gear and slowly turn tight circles, like at about the speed you would use to pull into a parking space. Do this going both for left and right. Crank the steering wheel all the way over so you're making the turning circle as tight as possible.
2. Listen carefully, if you hear the click click clicking going slower when you are making a right turn, then you likely have a bad CV joint on the right side. If the click click click is slower when turning right, then the bad join may be on the outer (left) side. Vice-versa for making left turns.
3. Once you have a suspicion as to which side is bad, park the car with the wheels turned fully away from the bad wheel (i.e. if you think, from the above test, that the right wheel is bad, park the car with the steering wheel full left). Get a flashlight and get down and see if you can look behind the tires at all. Check for CV grease that's been splattered all over the place. It'll be a thick greenish-grey grease, and it's unmistakable when it coats everything.
From your description, I'd suspect that you ruptured one of your CV joint boots. The grease got out, dirt got in, and the joint has gone bad. Fortunately, they aren't too hard to replace. The only troublesome part of the whole job is finding a socket big enough to fit the axle nut, and getting enough leverage on it to break it loose. You can often rent the socket from an auto parts store, and a 6-ft (2m) length of steel pipe from your local plumbing supply store slid over the handle of a breaker bar takes care of the leverage problem.
