First of all let me say I love my 97 9000, the way it drives and feels inside with lots of room and importantly the way it lends itself towards the DIY repairs/maintenance. However,IMO the 9000 (94 to 98) is not what I would subjectively call a refined car. It is a solid car, however it was built to the design standards of carmaking of the mid 1980's. Between then and now most car manufacturers have gone through say 5 or 6 generations of model redesign and improvement.
Modern car "refined" features I now crave include:
quiet cabin
stiffer chassis
limited to no torque steer
dash with modern oem electronics/gps/RDS radio/aux-in, etc.
keyless entry-pushbutton start
start-stop engine activation to save fuel on clogged highways(hybrids, 2012 bmw 3 series, etc)
direct injection- better mpg
etc.
