My 1994 9000CSE is having the repair done as we speak on both shock towers ($800 total). Car has 345,000 miles. Problem became noticable after I was rear-ended on the DC Beltway. Turns out, the impact busted one of the rusted-out shock towers. I wasn't aware of the extent of the rust until I removed all the upholstery in the hatch area of the car (will post some pictures soon). I noticed when removing the upholstery, there was some dampness, consistent with road spray entering via the holes created by the corrosion. From outside the car, feel up in the wheel well where the shocks enter the body. If it's soft and spongy, rust is probably an issue. BTW, I received a $660 from the insurance company for the accident, so I'll be out of pocket about $140 for the repair. I love the car, and was saddened at the prospect of retiring it. 400,000 miles here I come!
