My 1995 rusted through a few years ago. My indie called and told me to come pick up the car. He was not gonna work on it anymore. He had the rear wheels off and you could easily see the rust. Now, it turned out, (when I got all the upholstery out of the hatch area) that it was not as bad as it looked from underneath the wheel well. There is a fairly strong looking strap thingy that actually holds the top of the shock. That strap was not rusted at all. I got a country welder to do the job for about $400. (My usual body shop told me they wanted $2000 for the job.) Really, the majority of the time involved is in taking out and then replacing all the upholstery and trim in the hatch area. That job took me all day. But I was then able to deliver the car to the welder with the job ready to weld. I think that saved a LOT of money. In my case it was well worth saving my car. In others, maybe not. Take all the upholstery out and you will know a lot more.
