I have a (sort of) similar problem. The high level lights went out today, when I checked the voltage at the little socket that connects the high level light assembly within the high level light assembly I get 12v, but when i push the wires from a test bulb into the socket it doesn't light up. I checked the test bulb on the battery, its OK :-)
So, I guess there is a high resistance in the power lead leading up to the socket and maybe there is a poor connection from the lead to the socket connectors, or a poor connection further back down the loom.
So, does anyone know where the high level brakelight cable goes when it leaves the tailgate? Does it T off one of the rear brakelight clusters?
305K miles, so you have to expect the occasional problem!
