I recently finished this whole thing except my HG actually blew. I knew it was coming (kinda like you do) and as soon as I saw the gauge spiking I shut the car off and had it towed home. so no overheating unless the previous owner did, which I doubt.
if you can do the HG job, removing the broken studs is actually not that hard to do...
I used a craftsman set of easy outs. i soaked the broken studs with PB blaster over night. I used the biggest drill bit and easy out that would fit as to not break the easy out.
they actually came out remarkably easy.
so you dont neccesarily need the machine shop, only if you overheat for milling/planing.
in my opinion, the whole of the HG job is far more difficult than dealing with the broken studs with the head on a bench.
if you get to that point and want me to talk you through the easy out process, let me know, I'd be glad to do what I can.
