Yes, replacing the annoying upshift light is a sign of lunacy! You are the first person I have heard of who actually wanted this functionality, some (most?) people pay to have that light bulb removed - LOL!
My first guess on the mileage issue is that your Coolant Temperature Sensor is on its way out. Mine took a while to fail completely, but there were signs that it was starting to get flaky beforehand, one of which was that the car would start idling at about 1100 RPM occasionally even after the car was warmed up - the intermittent failure was spoofing the ECU into thinking that the car was just started from cold, so the mixture was enriched and the idle bumped up - quite poor mileage as a result. Is your car doing this?
