I think colder temps and winter gas could both be a factor. Or maybe your local station switched to a higher ethanol blend in general.
I'd very much worry that the upshift light not working correctly could indicate a vacuum leak though. Did you check all the hoses and everything else connected to that vacuum circuit like the blow off valve? I'm not sure if the BPC valve could cause a vacuum leak - I suppose it could but maybe someone who knows for sure could chime in.
Otherwise the oxygen sense certainly plays a big role in highway MPG. They last a long time on these cars but go bad slowly. I guess any of the sensors (coolant temp, MAP) could be suspect too, but I double check for vacuum leaks first. Replacing and gaping the plugs on a T5 is always a good idea.
I did get a kick out of the 'replacing the shift up light is a sign of insanity' comment! I totally agree. Though after a few years I think your brain develops a precision blind spot right over the stupid light.
