The only reason to compress the shock is for getting the belt on and off.
Try using a 6" C-clamp to compress the tensioner for belt R&R. Much better than a breaker bar and does the jobs of both compression and holding the shock compressed all at once. Easier, too, when working alone. You have to use it in such a way that the clamp won't slip, but just think through how you place it and it should be OK.
As long as the shock isn't suddenly decompressed (like when it slips off the homemade tool) it won't blow apart. New ones are completely uncompressed. If a shock does blow apart it usually can't be repaired. It may however still be functional in a pinch.
There are 3 bolts holding the tensioner assembly to the engine block. Two are 13mm hex head bolts, one is a Torx bolt with a flat head. This is the one that's most likely to be a problem to remove. You can get at all of these without compressing the shock.
I just replace the pulleys rather than regrease them. They go for 50K miles or so, so it's not unreasonable to replace the belt and both pulleys every 50K.
