Several years ago the oil leaked out of the tensioner on the '95 CS we'd gotten for our eldest daughter. I ordered another one but never got around to putting it on. Fast forward 5 years and 35K miles and it was still on the car working fine when we sold it at 173K. The A/C didn't work in that car, so maybe that helped, but the oil didn't seem critical. It's just a lightweight oil to give the spring some lube. But the shock had never come apart, which may have helped.
Last summer, putting that new shock I had in inventory on the car that replaced the '95, I had it blow apart when the holding tool slipped. When I have time will see if it can be repaired, but I just stuck a new shock on there. That car died last month and I pulled parts so now I have a spare shock to put on my '96 when I do the belt and pulleys when the good weather comes.
