Yes it is clear O2 sensor (or fuse) is the next best step. No, I'm not ignoring it - just did the things that were easy and needed doing anyway. I'll let you know how it goes. Mind you, how hard is it to check a fuse - and I've boxes of replacements - no accounting for stupidity :).

BTW this is a June 96 model. The check engine, comes on, off for a pause, then flashes 6 times, off for a pause, then on again. Am I reading the 6 flashes correctly?

Just for my education, is it the case that my "rev trick" is setting the mix to a new preset level?
