>>>What am I risking if I don't get Bosch? <<<
I bought a cheap Asian sensor for the rear sensor (not very critical) another car and went to the trouble of splicing and installing it under the car (PITA). This sensor lasted a few months then failed, was replaced with a Bosch sensor that lasted for years - lesson learned, certainly worth ~$20 not to have to repeat the work. I have heard that SMP sensors are OK, but I'm not willing to experiment.
>>>Is the only difference between Bosch universal and vehicle specific the presence of the connector? <<<
Yes, that's the general consensus. In addition to the universal sensors, I have used Bosch 4-wire sensors designed for a Chrysler on my Audi (4 sensors!) by cutting off the plug and splicing - I have heard that Bosch only makes a few different models, attaches a multitude of different plugs to suit different car manufacturers. Note that the wire attached to these sensors (stainless) does not solder very easily/well, so splicing properly is critical. The Bosch Universal kits with the waterproof connector seem fairly foolproof, or you can do something like what is in the link from VAP - I have done many this way.
