But how important is ZDDP? Is it critical? What does it REALLY do? Can you quantify it?
As I noted previously, I went to synthetic at 92K miles and that was almost 109K ago. Engine still runs great, uses no oil (does drip a little bit), gets 24-29 mpg.
Newer isn't always better, but I don't see the downside of going to a newer type of oil. A synth in a turbo motor just makes sense to me.
I think a lot of what we read and hear about oil is a mix of marketing hype from the oil companies, and info from sites like bobistheoilguy. Some of it is interesting stuff that may or may not make a practical real-world difference. For every guy who swears that Amsoil or Mobil 1 is a miracle, there are others who'll insist that changing their Castrol/Penzoil/Valvoline dino oil every 3K is the secret of long engine life.
