Finding 16 inch Saab wheels (long) Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Fri, 28 Jun 2013 18:07:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I finally got 16" wheels after years of foot dragging. What convinced me was that the freshest 205/60-15 Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires I can find were manufactured over a year ago. Rubber is perishable, and the selection of 15" tires is thin. Finding 16" Saab wheels can take more time than you expect, and there is a learning curve. The info in this post hopefully will make the process easier. If you already have Aero or Super Aero wheels, then you might know the answers to my questions in the last paragraph.
Saab made 3 generations of 16" wheels that fit any 9000. All are 16" x 6.5" wheels with a 27 mm offset, 65 mm centerbore and 4 x 108 mm bolt pattern. All were made by Ronal in Germany. The tire size is 205/55-16 for '93 and later models. I think earlier models with less roomy wheelwells had 205/50-16 tires. The 6.5" wide rim is ideal for 205 tires.
The first generation Aero wheel came on '91-'92 Turbo models and on the Aero that was introduced in the US in mid '93. It also came on some '90 and '91 900 models. The Saab part number is 89 67 036 for the wheel and 89 73 018 for the center cap. The Hollander Interchange Number for this wheel is 68157. See the link below for pictures, descriptions and part numbers of all 3 generations.
The second generation Super Aero wheel came on '94 - '97 Aero models. The Saab part number is 44 25 310 for the wheel and 44 25 476 for the center cap. This center cap will also fit the 1st generation Aero wheel. The Hollander Number for this wheel is 68164.
The third generation wheel came only on the '98 CSE of which only 1300 ~ 1500 cars were sold in the US. This wheel is similar to the Super Aero wheel but has exposed lug bolts and a smaller center cap. The Saab part number is 48 39 031 for the wheel and 45 66 311 for the 2-1/2" Griffin center cap. The wheel is relatively scarce. The center cap was used on some '96-'09 9-3 wheels and some '99 - '10 9-5 wheels, so it is easy to find. The Hollander number for this wheel is 68206, and for the center cap it is 560-68179. This is the wheel I bought. It is stamped with Ronal part number 002 0617. This wheel weighs 20 pounds.
I searched for all generations. I started with Goldwing and had no luck; sometimes they have these wheels, and sometimes they don't. The Saabnet classifieds were more productive, and that's where I found the wheels I bought. Anyone parting out a '91-'92 Turbo or '93 Aero might have the Aero wheel. They might have Super Aero wheels if they're parting out a '94 - '97 Aero. Anyone parting out a '98 CSE might have the last generation with the exposed lug bolts. Although a longer shot, you might find these wheels on any year and model of the 9000 and on 900s made between '88 and '93-1/2.
Car-part dot com sorts these wheels by application rather than by size, so 3 searches are necessary to find all generations. Specify a '91 model year to find the 1st generation, a '96 to find the 2nd generation and a '98 to find the last generation. This is a convenient way to search, but the car-part database is not necessarily up to date.
I don't know much about the Hollander Interchange Numbers. Some car part sellers go by Hollander instead of Saab part numbers. It is more commonly used by sellers of refurbished and take-off wheels such as capitalwheels dot com, originalwheels dot com and hubcaphaven dot com.
I'd like to know the Ronal part numbers of the Aero and Super Aero wheels. The Ronal number is stamped on the inside of the wheel. I'd also like to know the weight of the Aero and Super Aero wheels. Please post a reply if you know.
