Banging on it a hammer or bar will tell the tale. You're not going to hurt it if it's sound. Last summer I welded a piece into the side of the tower of my 96CSE with 242k which has been marinating in VT salt all its life. I covered the weld with epoxy and fiberglass cloth. The guy who inspected the car liked the fix. Unfortunately the car is now sidelined for other stuff too tedious to fix in the cold.
You may be aware of this but the lower shock bolts are likely to be seized.
