Biggest downside that I can see to many of the aftermarket systems is the potential for contact with the floor pan, which seems to be why SAAB used the "triangular suitcase" custom design for the center muffler.
Starla makes two different versions of the 9000 center muffler; one is like the original and the other is a cylindrical tube. I have used both and the cylindrical one is a very close fit and will occasionally hit the floor pan.
