Many thanks to DanaH and Simon S for the technical data Saab provided to dealers and service shops.
Several things come to mind as you compare the owners manual specifications to the technical data / shop manual:
1. Saab was more forthcoming to dealers and shops than to owners about engine oil.
2. Saab wanted synthetic or at least semi-synthetic oil. Preferably an oil that would stay in grade, not evaporate, and resist sludging.
3. Saab wanted an additive package with a lot of ZDDP. A typical API SG oil had 1200-1300 ppm of phosphorus. Saab was more concerned about reducing engine wear than preserving catalytic converters.
4. Saab wanted as heavy a viscosity as the local climate allowed, all the way up to 20W50 in hot (above 59°F) climates. Saab wasn't concerned about conserving fuel.
5. Saab wanted oil that met higher standards than API SG. The specification was for oil that met both API SG and CCMC G4/G5. G4 and especially G5 were more demanding than SG. Europe set the pace.
