Newer oils have eliminated ZDDP from their formulations to help preserve the catalytic converter. As you state, some owners of older cars (I have a 1970 Volvo 1800E) have discovered that the ZDDP is essential for keeping the camshaft/lifter interface lubricated - if not, camshafts and lifters develop severe wear. There are "boutique" oils that have higher ZDDP concentrations, or some owners like me use an additive for this. I believe that the newer oils are probably superior in most ways (when were the first "synthetic oils" widely available?) but are lacking in some other aspects.
