Feedback on the Alum Radiators Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 5 Aug 2015 20:05:12 In Reply to: two sources Alum Radiators - bay or Amz same one?, DanaH, Fri, 5 Jun 2015 13:06:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My current 1994 Aero came to me with the cheap single-row radiator discussed at the link below (I bought this exact car!). The Aero has been running much hotter than my previous 1994 CS Turbo, with the temp needle getting close to the red zone on some occasions. As feared, I had a problem with it overheating on a hot day in stop-and-go traffic: after pulling in front of a client's house, the cooling system boiled over slightly after I shut it off - oops!
After this occurred, I immediately bought the OPL-brand all-aluminum double-row radiator from Amazon (cheaper than Ebay) and am very happy with it. It appears to me to be a very high quality piece, good looking welds, all necessary fittings, and it fits perfectly. The only issue that I found is that it has a generic brass drain valve that may be a problem if I ever use it to drain the coolant, as it will probably interfere with a support piece on the car's frame - out of fear of breaking the delicate plastic valves on the original radiators, I have learned to drain the coolant by removing a hose instead, so this may never be an issue. Note to anyone buying and installing one of these: you should have an assortment of short M5 metric screws on hand, as the sheet-metal screws used to attach ancillary items to the original plastic radiator are replaced with threaded receptacles on the aluminum version (probably a much stronger attachment) - I used stainless steel screws slathered in anti-sieze in case I ever need to remove them.
I just drove the car on a 700 mile trip last weekend, with temps in the lower 90s and some stop-and-go traffic after cruising at 80 mph - temp needle never went above 9:30, even with the A/C on. I consider this a huge success!
