There are a few potential culprits depending upon which side of the engine bay the noise is coming from. My car has had an incredibly loud ticking for the last 5yrs. Nothing has failed and the car left me stranded, but it never made me feel like it was an ok sound.
middle of the engine bay near the bulkhead - the injector cycles can be making a ticking noise.
Front Left corner of the car - the valve on top of the charcoal canister can become louder with age. Solution is a new purge valve or shaking the canister. I removed mine and shook the charcoal contents and that seemed to quiet it some.
Also, Left front corner - Recently, my AC compressor died and I replaced it with a used one from eBay ($45 VS $380 new) and the sound is gone (yay!).
You can drain some oil and put in a Qt of ATF to thin the fluid to encourage the Hydraulic lifters to let go of old oil.
