Since it responded to the thicker oil, it definitely makes sense it's a sticky lifer. A bit of lifter noise, especially when cold, is pretty common for these engines. I don't think it's hugely harmful if you take it easy until the engine is warm, but it's worth trying to fix. You could pull the valve cover and cams and given them a poke to see if any feel different from the others.
As Diamond Dave mentioned there is a bunch of other stuff it could be (the fuel injectors can be pretty loud!) but because it changed with the thicker oil, a lifter is a good bet.
