That engine history could mean some damage has happened.
We had a '96 on which the oil pump cover o-ring parted and leaked lots of oil out, when at the same time unbeknownst to us the oil pressure gauge was not working. So my brother drove it some distance with nearly no oil in it. O-ring replaced, oil pressure gauge replaced, oil back in it, it ticked all the time. And sometimes shuddered badly and almost stopped.
What was going on was, Number One piston skirt had "caught on" and started chafing on the bore, and the wear was so bad that even with full oil in and the lower end cleaned up it kept on catching there. (There's a jet down there that's meant to spray oil in the area and keep it lubed. With no oil pressure the jets don't spray and splash lubrication alone doesn't work with no oil in the sump.)
There was also obviously bad wear in the balance chain area. Engine ended up being junk as oil pressure then began to fail, from I guess metal particles getting into the oil pump and pressure relief valve, even though we thought it had all been cleaned up.
A tree fell on the car and it ended up getting totalled by the insurance company and that was a great relief.
Have your mechanic pull the oil pressure relief valve and make sure it is free of debris and not scored, before doing anything as massive as pulling the motor for internal work.
Around here a used motor would be the way to go, though they're getting scarce in the junkyards.
I doubt you'll find much wear on the bearings, the mains probably none at all.
