It's normal for that shaft to have a little play in the fore-and-aft direction: maybe 1/4" or a little less. And if it shifts well, it's unlikely the linkage needs adjustment.
One place the linkages do sometimes have trouble is the rubber coupler in the middle - you might take a look at the coupler's condition.
Can you pin down when this noise happens? It it repetitive or only occasional? Does it matter whether the car is in gear or neutral, and whether the clutch is depressed? Does it seem to relate to acceleration or coasting?
