Oh boy, the "reusing slave cylinders" thing... ;^)
People "in the know" say you should never ever reuse a slave cylinder. And with good reason... you've seen what it takes to change one. But I've also heard aftermarket ones are not of good quality and "genuine Saab" ones are no longer available. So last time I did clutch/transmission work on my car I kept the existing slave.
One other note though: a very small amount of grease on the transmission splines is good, and maybe a tiny amount on the face of the throwout bearing where it contacts the pressure plate fingers. But do not put grease on the contact area between the bearing and the slave cylinder, or you'll have 0% chance of it staying put while you try to reinstall the tranny.
As a side note, if anyone here knows of a way to keep the throwout bearing in place during transmission installation *other* than relying on friction with the slave, I'd love to know about it! It seems like there's got to be a better way, I just don't know what it is.
