Possible scenario - the leaking expansion tank was caused by excess pressure in the cooling system due to head gasket leak. While tank was cracked, system did not build sufficient pressure to push the coolant into the cylinders. Once tank was replaced (plugging the leak) and allowing the system to build pressure, coolant is now getting into the cylinders and being burned (producing the white smoke). Depending on the severity of the leak, you could try just leaving the cap off the expansion tank, and see if there is less white sweet smelling smoke.
