Okay, I will try to clarify, but I am by no means a trans/gearbox expert. Never taken one apart, and don't really intend to because of the 'important' things you mention.
I am calling a spare inner driver assembly: a unit of a cup/shaft that drives the tripod bearing end of the axleshaft. There is a ball bearing inside there. That bearing is lubricated by the transaxle oil, as it is 'inside' the case when the unit is bolted to the transaxle case. The bearing supports the shaft as it passes through a mounting bracket that bolts to the case with 5 bolts. That bearing on my car is what failed. Rather than replacing that bearing, which I did not have on hand, I installed a complete (spare) driver assembly.
As far as manual transaxle lube oil, there are a lot of posts on that particular topic here on this board. I have used 10W-30 engine oil in the past on other Saab 9000 man transmissions, but this is the first time I have used an alternative. It seems to be similar viscosity to 10w-30 engine oil, very pourable. Trans shifts better than previously.
I poured in 2.5 qts, but as some spilled out the 'full' port on the side of the case, I may have actually only used 2 or 2-1/4 qts. I was anticipating 2.5 needed, and by the time I saw it was full and coming out the side, it was already puddling a bit on the floor.
I don't believe I touched the 'differential' bearings. I don't know about setting preload for those bearings, or the 'shims'.
There were 3 rather thick 'shims', that I found as I removed the original driver assembly, and I re-installed them. They seemed to be more like 'spacers', however. Quite thick, on the order of 1 mm each or so.
